There are several different species if marlins caught in Hawaii. Big game fishermen come from all around the world to land these beasts. The King of the ocean is the Pacific Blue marlin. The next largest of the marlins is the Black Marlin. The ever so exciting Striped Marlin are common in our waters. Extremely rare in Hawaii is the Sail Fish. The smallest but best eating is the Shortbill Spearfish. Any deep sea fishing captain worth their weight in salt has caught all of these marlins.
Makaira mazara — Pacific Blue Marlin. This is the most sought after deep sea game fish in Hawaii. The largest marlin ever caught on rod and reel was a Blue Marlin off of Oahu, Hawaii in 1970. This Bue Marlin is a magnificent World record fish, weighing in at 1805 pounds. The average weight of Blue Marlin ranges from 125 to 200 pounds. Marlin are loners and therefore usually caught one at a time. Sometimes in the fall, marlin can school up and attack small schools of bait. Late September and October can be fun time to fish for Blue Marlin
Makaira indica — Black Marlin. These large deep sea game fish are not very common in Hawaii. They usally come in the 200 to 500 pound size. They are so closely related to their Blue cousins that they are difficult to tell apart.
Tetrapturus audax — Striped Marlin. These marlin roam the waters of Hawaii in the winter months. The Striped Marlin are found is schools of three to six. Therefore when they attack the lures behind the boat all hell breaks loose. These critters range in size from 20 to 100 pounds. These fish look absolutely stunning when they are mounted on the wall.
Tetrapturus angustiroshris — Shortbill Spearfish are the smallest and the best eating of the marlin family. 20 to 50 pounds is the most common size of these fish. The Spearfish are not that common, but sure are fun to catch when they bite.
Isophorus platypterus — Sailfish. These are the most magnificent of the marlins. They are also the rarest of the Marlin. Found in Hawaii in sizes 50 to 100 pounds, most fishermen will not see them in a life time of fishing in Hawaii. |
